DIET TIPS! Diabetes

Among the tests carried out in a recent medical outreach in Abuja by my organization were blood glucose tests.

In a certain organization (name withheld) 70% of staff examined were aged 35 or less and 46% of staff whose fasting blood sugar levels were tested had high results, while 54% had normal result findings.

Worrisome! Don’t you think?

Although this one-time finding may not pronounce the participants (46%) as diabetic, but it is a very strong hint on the fact that diabetes is on the rise. It is now common to find a person living with diabetes in at least every two families; obesity has become a common sight in our society so diabetes and other chronic diseases thrive.

If you’re concerned about diabetes, you can make a difference by eating a healthy diet, keeping your weight in check, and getting exercise.

Eating right for diabetes comes down to three things:
  • What you eat. Your diet makes a huge difference! You should eat mostly plant foods, cut back on refined carbohydrates and sugary drinks, and choose healthy fats over unhealthy fats. Focus on whole grain carbohydrates since they are a good source of fiber and they are digested slowly, keeping blood sugar levels more even. Whole grain carbohydrates include oat meal, whole wheat bread, brown rice, whole wheat pasta etc.

  • When you eat. Keeping regular meal and snack times also affects your blood sugar levels and will help to keep them more constant. Therefore, establish regular eating habits. Your body is better able to regulate blood sugar levels and your weight when you maintain a regular meal schedule. The following tips will help you,
-Do not skip breakfast

- Eat small meals at regular times. It is helpful to eat 3 small meals plus 3 snacks spread out through the day. People tend to eat larger portions when they are overly hungry, so eating regularly will help you keep your portions in check.
- Listen to your body and know when you’ve had enough to eat.
How much you eat. Portion sizes matter. Even if you eat very healthy meals, if you eat too much you will gain weight, which is a factor in diabetes. The key is to eat a balanced diet. Make 50% of the meal in your plate vegetables and then the remaining 50% protein and carbohydrate Start your meals with vegetables, which will help fill you up and give you lots of nutrients.

You do not need to eat special foods, but instead simply emphasize vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. A diabetes diet is simply a healthy eating plan that is high in nutrients, low in fat, and moderate in calories. It is a healthy diet for anyone!

WORLD CANCER DAY

Today is world cancer day. I awoke this day remembering loved ones that I lost to the dreaded disease- cancer. If only I can turn back the hand of time and had the power to keep one alive, I would not let cancer touch any of my own.

Thumbs up to WHO for their supports in promoting ways to ease the global burden of cancer, and to many who are in one way or the other “standing up” against this global nightmare.

WHO estimates that 84 million people will die of cancer between 2005 and 2015 without intervention. Preventing cancer and raising the quality of life for cancer patients is a major theme for most cancer related researches.

As a young child, I was taught that prevention is better than cure. If cancer didn’t occur, there will be no need to worry about curing cancer.

I dream of a world free of cancer

Any one wishing to maintain a life time of good health should strive to avoid late dinners. The aggravated weight gain, heart burn and even sleep deprivation could be effects of eating late dinners. Add this to the list of your 2011 resolutions if you are already caught in the habit or being led to it by your busy schedules.

Cut down on salt

According to researchers, those who significantly cut down on the amount of salt contained in their diet could reduce their chances of developing cardiovascular disease by as much as twenty five percent.
While I say bravo to the respondents who have resolved to cut down on their salt intake, now learn how to cut down on salt.

Stop Smoking

A popular TV advert says “smokers are liable to dying young” a huge bill board in the area where I live says the same. With this kind of warning, why would any one smoke? (I thought)
I found it quite impressive that some respondents that found themselves in the habit of smoking are resolving to quit this year.

If you are reading this and you are in the category of those that resolved to stop smoking this year, you absolutely have my prayers!

Exercise More
The remote control, elevators, the automobile and to some extent the computer are all part of the environment that hindered many from being active. No doubt many wondered through last year with little or no exercise.

Exercise is not only good for your physical health; it also improves your concentration and thinking, thereby making you more productive. Whether it’s walking, jogging or getting to the gym, to exercise more is a great New Year resolution.

#3
Take Enough Rest

I always knew that taking enough rest is good for our well-being; to know that it came top on my respondents list is some how surprising to me.

One very important aspect of mental health and well-being is simply allowing the mind time to do nothing. It is in the process of not being busy that one is free to contemplate, meditate, recharge and generally appreciate the world around them. (A world which they are busy to notice).

When the mind feels stressed and clogged with thought, the effects on the body can be adverse. Although I know that this is a resolution that some workaholics may find very hard to keep, taking time to get enough rest can have amazing health benefits.

Rest is a replenisher. Add it to your list of resolutions and give your body the pleasure of healing itself and reabsorbing the natural forces that it has lost through the use and abuse of the body and mind.

EAT RIGHT
When I noticed that Eat Right was popular, I wondered what in the world my respondents have been eating. A number of respondents resolved to stop eating junks; I guess their big battle also is to eat right.
While you pray and hope that this motivation that was ushered in by the New Year does not die by the middle of the year, please note that eating a proper balanced meal is a sure step to lose weight.

TOP 10 NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

A Healthy New Year!
This is my first series for the year. At first I thought it was ridiculous to hit the streets of Abuja just to find out people’s health resolutions for 2011. Very disheartening, majority of the people I encountered didn’t have any health resolutions for the year but a good number of persons were able to think of something on the spot.
Many people make New Year resolutions in order to better their lives. Do they keep those resolutions? That will be a story that can only be concluded in the next 12 months.

 Now the top 10 resolutions
#1
LOSE WEIGHT
I found this to be an extremely popular New Year resolution. After consuming a feast during the Christmas holidays, its time to get into shape. Some people wish to lose a few pounds, while for some; it’s another fresh year to battle excess weight which they were not able to defeat last year.
